Live Music (Chautauqua): The Steel Wheels
April 8 at 7 pm. The Red Brick.
$30 tickets. SOLD OUT (you could try your luck at the door--if season ticket holders are not able to attend, seats may open up).
Four Way Street (Collin Hannington, Mike McDonnell, Ian Duncan, Louis Corbeil) from Hinton will open the show.
The Steel Wheels--Eric Brubaker, Brian Dickel, Jay Lapp, Trent Wagler--capture audiences with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music and their deep commitment to roots and community. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this band is renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage. They often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent's unmistakeable tenor with four part harmonies inspired by their Mennonite heritage.
The devotion of The Steel Wheels to roots, community, and family is reflected in everything from production process and booking agency to merchandise and touring. They perform an annual SpokeSongs bicycle music tour, during which band members tow their instruments, equipment, and merchandise via bicycle and blog about their adventures. Watch highlights of their two-wheeled adventures in the Media section of their website.
Their merchandise is created through grassroots connections. Lucas Roasting Company (located just outside Harrisonburg) created "Halfway to Heaven", a dark roast coffee in honour of the band. Their t-shirts are made in downtown Harrisonburg, and a potter who is Jay's childhood friend makes their mugs.
The Steel Wheels released Red Wing in 2010 and Lay Down Lay Low in 2012. No More Rain is set for public release on April 16.

Live Music (Chautauqua): Alex Cuba
March 19 at 7:00 pm. The Red Brick.
$30 tickets available online or by calling Marilyn 780-723-6224.
From The Hip will open the show.
Alex Cuba is an award-winning singer-songwriter who is not tied to tradition. His sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks and powerful guitar riffs bend Latin music stereotypes. He has collaborated with artists such as Nelly Furtado, Juan Luis Guerra, Juanes and Ron Sexsmith.
Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, Alex was immersed in music at a young age. His first stage appearance, which aired on Cuban national TV, came at the age of four. He played claves in a group directed by his father, guitarist and teacher Valentin Puentes. Alex went on to study guitar, tres, percussion and bass, practicing eight hours a day during his teens.
In 1999, Alex moved to Vancouver, B.C where he recorded an album titled Morumba Cubana alongside his twin brother Adonis as The Puentes Brothers. Alex then went on to record his solo debut album Humo De Tobaco that earned him a Juno award for World Music Album of the Year in 2006. The following year, Alex released Agua Del Pozo and earned another Juno in 2008. He released his third album, the self-titled Alex Cuba, in 2009.
With Alex Cuba, Alex gained international recognition. At the 2010 Latin Grammy Awards, he took home the award for Best New Artist and was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Album. He was also nominated for Best Latin Pop Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards.
In 2012, Alex released his fourth album, Ruido En El Sistema, which has once again earned him a Juno nomination for World Music Album of the Year.
With a heart as big as his retro 'fro, Cuba takes it all in stride and focuses on what he does best: crafting songs that cut through linguistic and cultural barriers like a machete through sugarcane.

Special Screening (Nova Theatre): Silver Linings Playbook
March 17 at 4 pm. Nova Theatre.
After suffering for years with an undiagnosed bipolar disorder, high school teacher Pat (Bradley Cooper) is sent to a psychiatric facility following a violent incident sparked by him finding his wife having sex with a co-worker.
Eight months later he's released into his parents' (Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver) care. He's hoping to win back his wife, despite the fact that she's put a restraining order on him.
Still given to odd rants and inappropriate comments, Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young widow who had a breakdown following the death of her husband. She offers to help him win back his wife if he'll enter a dance competition with her.
Jenniver Lawrence won an Academy Award for Actress in a Leading Role this film. Silver Linings Playbook received eight Academy Award nominations, achieving the rare feat of being nominated in all four acting categories.

March 2 at 7:00 pm. The Red Brick.
$30 tickets available online or by calling Marilyn 780-723-6224.
Pandora Players will open the show with an excerpt from their upcoming production FIRE!
With crystalline vocals, feisty carbon-fibre harp playing and an unfettered sense of fun Keri Lynn Zwicker has been a bright addition the Western Canadian folk music scene. Her eclectic repertoire and quick wit delight listeners who are surprised at how truly entertaining a harp show can be.
She has toured and showcased in Alberta, B.C. and Saskatchewan with her versatile trio, HarpRouge featuring Tami Cooper on flute and Jeff Faragher on Cello. While playing playing folk clubs and festivals from Enderby to La Ronge and from Edmonton to Bragg Creek, Keri Lynn has garnered rave reviews for her lively stage presence, beautiful gaelic-styled singing and her ability to demonstrate the versatility of the Celtic harp.
A HarpRouge show features Keri Lynn’s fresh take on traditional folk songs, finger-blazing jigs & reels and fiery Latin instrumentals. Her lively arrangements ensure that her carbon-fibre instrument is always the driving force – never the frill. “The term ‘multi-dimensional’ barely does justice to her ability to address and envelop so many musical styles….” Peter North, Edmonton Journal

Writing Workshop (YRAF/Creative Campus): Delving into the wilderness & finding your way out - a writing workshop with Jeremy Derksen
April 14 from 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Galloway Station Museum.
$25. Call Creative Campus Coordinator Tracy Templeton to register: 780-723-5131.
Misadventure is inevitable – and often enhances the journey –but if you don’t want to get permanently lost it helps to have a good map or a compass. From literary device to journalistic convention, this three-hour workshop will explore the navigational tools to set you on the path to good storytelling: creative process, plot development, characterization, writing mechanics and craft. The goal is to learn enough of the basics so that you can harness your story ideas without taming them.
Jeremy Derksen believes injuries are like toothpaste—somewhat distasteful, perhaps, but necessary. The former outdoor adventure editor for Vue Weekly has been attacked by an owl, chased by a llama, slept outside in the woods in freezing temperatures and eaten pickled eggs in small town Alberta. His journalism, essays and poems have appeared in publications such as The Ski Journal, the Globe and Mail, Avenue magazine, Whitefish Review and his irregular blog,www.outdoorsinsider.ca.

Live Music (Chautauqua): John Reischman and The Jaybirds
April 13 at 7:00 pm. The Red Brick Arts Centre & Museum.
$30 tickets available at Thymes Two, Freezen Hot Music, Ernie O's, The Red Brick. This performance is the fourth of four in Chautauqua's 2012 season.
Years of European and North American tours, four critically acclaimed albums, two Juno nominations and two Canadian Folk Music Award nominations…little wonder, the buzz around John Reischman and The Jaybirds continues to grow. Like the mandolinist at its helm, the group fashions a stylish, elegant take on bluegrass that is at once innovative and unadorned, sophisticated and stripped-down, happily old-fashioned, yet unselfconsciously new. To see their live show is to believe it. A genial blend of story-telling and side-show humor provides the backdrop to their studied performance of original songs, instrumentals, and newly arranged traditional material.
Hailing from the variegated ranks of the contemporary West Coast acoustic music scene, each of these ‘birds has certainly earned his wings: the list of projects they have contributed to over the years is nothing less than a short list of acoustic power houses. Together, their seamless ensemble work makes for one of the freshest, most tasteful band-sounds on the folk and bluegrass circuit today.

Annual Event (Edson & District Community Learning Society): International Women's Day
March 8 at 5:30 pm. The Galloway Station Museum.
$30 tickets.
Celebrate the power of women.
Keynote by Kelly Falardeau. Kelly got burnt when she was two-years-old and was always taught that she was just a normal kid like everyone else and so she didn't know life any different.
Kelly has learned through the years that she is unique in that when she has a dream or desire to do something, she just DOES IT. When she wanted to plan a balloon decorating convention and someone told her no, she couldn't do it, she proved him wrong. When she decided she wanted to have a mobile scrapbook store and her husband agreed, she did it. When she wanted to get on the Dragons' Den tv show, she got selected to present to the dragons. When she wanted to know if men in wheelchairs could have sex she produced a documentary about it. When people asked her to speak at their events, she just did it. She didn't let fear get in the way or doubt her self.
Kelly is an international Keynote Speaker, inspiring others to find their dreams and realize that No Risk means No Rewards.

Live Music (Chautauqua): Jesse Peters Trio
March 3 at 7:00 pm. The Red Brick Arts Centre & Museum.
$25 tickets available at Thymes Two, Freezen Hot Music, Ernie O's, The Red Brick. This performance is the third of four in Chautauqua's 2012 season.
Jesse Peters has been a force in the Canadian music scene since 1998. While still in high school, he garnered rave reviews as a singer and songwriter from distinguished jazz artists Ingrid Jensen and Diana Krall. By the age of 21, his group, The Peters Drury Trio, had released two critically acclaimed recordings. Over the years, he has been featured in Canadian Living, in the Toronto Star, on TVOntario’s Studio Two and in two CBC Canada Live broadcasts.
Jesse is also known as the face and voice of funksoul artist Paramedic. His sophomore album, Love, Doubt and Soul was nominated Urban Recording of the Year at the 2009 Western Canadian Music Awards; CKUA’s Tony King named this album one of his top 5 picks of 2009; and one track was selected for Big Rock Brewery’s Untapped Vol. 3.
Jesse’s newest recording, Face Time, is jazz-edged-soul, embracing a vocal driven mix of original and standard tunes filled with energy, innovation, scope, and range. From an ethereal falsetto that captures a fragility and depth of vocal colour to a cheeky commentary on our all-consuming digital world; from the classic swing Jesse was known for with the Peters Drury Trio to energetic romps that pay tribute to Ray Charles and, yes, the King of Pop himself, Jesse has crafted a set of tunes that beg to be listened to with only the finest of wine, or indeed an excellent scotch, in hand. Retro, classic, and recorded live-off-the-floor at Edmonton’s Winspear Centre, Face Time, is a tribute to Jesse’s jazz and soul music influences, showing where this vocalist has taken his talent over the years.
In concert, Jesse and his trio traverse a musical path of originals written over the past ten years and classics that give wing to his vocal range. Audience engaging and musically captivating.
Local group New Member (Tyler Babiuk, Ryan Halterman, Daniel Handford, and Logan Handford) be the opening act.
For ticket information, contact Marilyn at 780-723-6224.

Jessica Heine (hi-na) is a singer songwriter based in Yellowknife, NT, Canada. She is a graduate of the University of Alberta with a BMus in classical vocal performance, but although she revels in singing Bach Oratorios and the occasional operatic aria, her real love is folk music and more specifically the art of storytelling through song. Noteworthy performances include such festivals as The Edmonton Folk Music Festival, and Medicine Hat’s Tongue on the Post Festival, where she was the top selling artist of the weekend. She has been a three-time finalist at Calgary Folk Festival’s songwriting contest, as well as a finalist at 2007’s Kerrville New Folk Competition in Texas. In the spring of 2010, Heine was commissioned to write a song for Tourism Jasper, and the song, “Give Me Jasper” has been used in ads for the national park, in a YouTube promotional video and in 2010, Heine was invited by the French tourism program Echappées Belles to perform the song live for one of their upcoming episodes. In the fall of 2010, Heine will embarked on her largest tour to date, a four-month cross-Canada trek with singer/songwriter Kelly Tschritter. In 2011, Jessica moved from Edmonton to Yellowknife and is looking forward to all the inspiration the north has to send her way.

The years of growing up together have allowed for a cohesive composition of music and every song truly sings a different tune. From beer drinkin and hell raisin' to heartache and triumph, Freeburn offers an infectious hook and groove in every piece they do. Their fans range in age from eight to fifty-eight, crossing all walks and demographics, - no surprise, once you have the Freeburn fever...

Growing tired of the 'blues trio', The Great North Blues Band offers something different to blues fans: a horn section, keyboards, and other instrumentation. This gives a 'big band' feel and an energy level that keeps the crowds intrigued and the music cookin'.
