Live Music (Ernie O's): bluessmyth

December 9 & 10 at 9:30 pm. Ernie O's Pub.

bluessmyth combines the words "blues" and "smyth" (or smith) as the forging and fusion of their roots in blues music with some heavy, metallic overtones and gospel & soul influences. bluessmyth is a thinking man's rock band. Their lyrical content covers the gamut of the human experience.
In early 2009, bluessmyth released "Sola Gratia" which they toured across Canada from British Columbia to Ontario. With two other successful albums under their belt, this new, riveting and introspective recording from the Canadian trio includes powerful tracks written about Hurricane Katrina and deep human experiences such as reaching out in despair, soul searching, and finding redemption.
The dynamic of bluessmyth has evolved with the addition of drummer Celene Yohemas in 2008. Seamlessly matched with the solid, definitive bass lines of Jason Yaholkoski, and supporting soulful singer and guitarist Chris Yaholkoski, this new chemistry is a recipe for international success.
In Chris' words: “ in many ways, bluessmyth is about making joy out of pain, good out of bad, rising above.”

Starting by occasional jams in -lead singer- Michael Gress's garage mid 2008, the guys soon started to get a very good vibe from their sound and decided to start working on material. Things started to come together when -guitarist- Marty Powers moved into his house on the west end of the city. This house would be the birth place of a modern rock band and was soon known as "The House of Soul". Things really started to move forward and frequent visitors would come to listen to the practices. Supporters began to develop with the band and their new jam space. With these supporters a few small shows developed for birthdays and house parties. On January 25, 2009 Self Evolution played at Orlando's 2 open jam in Edmonton and soon became friends with the incredible bluesy house band The Vindicators. For the next few months Self Evolution would go quite often to play a spot in the Sunday afternoon ritual. The first official gig was at The Rendezvous Pub in Edmonton on Feb 21/09. Self Evolution started playing shows as much as they could.

For these rockers from Stony Plain, Alberta, making Friction-Free rock means making the music they believe in and love: a sublime yet powerfully heartfelt mix of both classic and contemporary rock and roll. Raw and honest lyrics partnered with searing guitar solos that echo the likes of some of the most legendary artists. This powerful band creates songs of timeless integrity with hints of everything ranging from Classic Southern Rock to Seattle Grunge. Freeburn are not trying to make manufactured music, pump out hits or sell an image. Together, the band mates (most of whom have been close friends for years) organically compose authentic sounds and palpably catchy riffs and melodies. The years of growing up together have allowed for a cohesive composition of music and every song truly sings a different tune.  From beer drinkin and hell raisin' to heartache and triumph, Freeburn offers an infectious hook and groove in every piece they do. Their fans range in age from eight to fifty-eight, crossing all walks and demographics, - no surprise, once you have the Freeburn fever...

Through all this musical adventure, Dick maintains a unique and refreshing sound, making his original compositions and those of his influences blend seamlessly; indeed - many people have mistaken the works of the masters for Dick's own, and vice-versa.

The start of the year has been quite different for us.  Never before have we experienced a fire ban in the Spring, (especially when we had to drain 10,000 litres of water out of the garden) but when it is province-wide, firings must wait!
As soon as the bans were lifted, we madly did two firings and will be doing another this week. Join us to see the results.  See you soon! -

Live Music (Ernie O's): The Wiremen

June 24 & 25 at 9:30 pm. Ernie O's Pub.
No cover charge.
The Wiremen are a 5-piece Roots Rockin’ Rhythm & Blues act that is comprised of seasoned and established musicians from Central Alberta. They deliver an up-tempo, hi-energy professional show that gets people off their seat and on the dance floor. You will hear a classic, diverse and exciting selection of swinging Rock & Roll and Rhythm & Blues numbers, mixed with The Wiremen’s grooving, hard driving originals.

Frontman/Rhythm Guitarist Creed Henry Taylor recently relocated his family to Alberta from Austin, Texas, where he was a bandleader since 1991, enjoying a fruitful success as a singer/songwriter playing the top clubs and festivals. Taylor has shared the stage with dozens of name artists and his band was the sole opening act for Blues master James Cotton, R&B legend Delbert McClinton and rock icon Bob Dylan. Creed has sought out the right musicians for “The Wiremen”, not only in abilities but their solid commitment to the vision and the music.

Next to join was veteran Alberta Drummer/Vocalist Arne Mack. Since 1969, Arne has been laying down the beat for countless Alberta bands and has also led his own projects, including SRO, which was Alberta’s top cabaret band. A great singer/songwriter also, Arne is an ARIA member and well respected in the Alberta music community.

Lead Guitarist/Vocalist Chris Schueller was the next addition. A unique and powerful player, Chris was tearing up the festivals and clubs in Germany for many years fronting the blues rock band One Dog Town before moving to Alberta. A terrific songwriter to boot, Chris sets the stage afire with his fiery but tasteful licks.

Roy James has seen and done it all - he has been up and down the road fronting Rock, Blues and Country Bands for decades. With his 1976 Fender Jazz Bass, a phenomenal voice and great stage presence he works hard in the engine room of the band, laying down the groove with an edgy, wiry sound.

Last to join- but certainly not least - was killer harpman/ sax player Ron Halliday. With a soaring style, Ron binds the signature licks and leads. A multi instrumentalist and great singer, he may even change to his flute in midsong. As a veteran of many Calgary based blues bands,  he is the spice of the group.

Despite this, his large and loyal fan base has continued to grow, both here in Canada and the U.S.  With the imminent release of a new album, KIN.DNESS, Bell is offering to a wider audience, his eloquent and heartfelt material.  “We’ve managed to develop an niche audience that is very receptive to my music,” Steve explains, “and now we have a new album coming out that I think can potentially cut a wider swathe than previous ones.”

Live Music (Ernie O's): Self Evolution

Picture
April 1 & 2 at 9 pm. Ernie O's Pub.
No cover charge.
Starting by occasional jams in -lead singer- Michael Gress's garage mid 2008, the guys soon started to get a very good vibe from their sound and decided to start working on material. Things started to come together when -guitarist- Marty "F-ing" Powers moved into his house on the west end of the city.

$25 tickets available at Freezen Hot Music (Edson), Thymes Two and Ernie O's.

Ballet Kelowna is breathtakingly beautiful, bold and fresh; captivating audiences with classical and innovative dance.  Because they are a small ballet company, their performances are intimate, carefully crafted, rare and precious, captivating audiences through the movement of dance.

Actions Consequences - Returning choreographer, Gioconda Barbuto, debuts a much anticipated newly commissioned ballet set to the music of Montreal composer Michael Oesterle.  Gioconda’s choreography is well known (Negotiating Shifts – 2008) for its passion, intensity and lyrical physicality. “Lignes et Pointes” (1975) is a masterful interpretation of the music of French Canadian composer Pierre Mercure.  Uniquely co-choreographed by two choreographers, Brian Macdonald  C.C. (Montreal, QC)) and Brydon Paige (Duncan, BC).  “In Stride” (1999), set to the pulsating music of Glenn Branca, is a light-hearted, effervescent and joyfully physical romp through the demands of contemporary choreographic vocabulary.  Playfully energetic  and inno-classically inspired.  Rounding out the program is Artistic Director David LaHay’s engaging “Dvorak Dances” (2006), set to a selection of Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s popular Slavonic Dances.

Chautauqua is pleased to announce the evening will begin with performances by Edson Recreational Dance students.
