<![CDATA[Community Arts Network Of Edson (CANOE) - Blog]]>Sun, 19 May 2013 23:16:10 -0800Weebly<![CDATA[A Hidden Gem]]>Sun, 19 May 2013 22:19:03 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2013/05/a-hidden-gem.htmlWhenever I travel, I love seeking out or stumbling upon book stores. Why, oh why is it I forget about the used book store that is just around the corner and down the road from my house? The Double Read Book Nook is truly a hidden gem in Edson. Last Friday, I finally took a minute to check out a new store in Edson: Farmer's Daughters Country Decor and More. Double Read is right next door, and down the stairs (across from Ron's Outdoor Source for Sports). Although Kathleen Herndon didn't have the book I need for my next book club meeting, I did pick up The Beauty of Humanity Movement by one of my favourite Canadian authors, Camilla Gibb, for $6. There are thousands of books to browse. Stop by and stock up for summer!]]><![CDATA[This Christmas, don't buy a thing--buy an experience!]]>Mon, 10 Dec 2012 05:29:17 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2012/12/this-christmas-dont-buy-a-thing-buy-an-experience.htmlChautauqua is Edson's volunteer presenting organization. The 2013 Chautauqua Season offers some great gift-giving ideas. For $125, you can purchase a set of season tickets which gives you tickets and a reserved seat for 5 different shows. The tickets are transferrable, so you could buy one set of season tickets and give the tickets to 5 different people--or two sets and give them to 5 different couples.
A limited number of single seats are available for each of the performances $30 or $32.50 online. Right now, only 6 single seats (non-season ticket seats) are released for each show. There may be more closer to the date of the show, depending on availability.
Finally, there is one extra performance that is open to the public: Jake's Gift on January 19th. The same play will be performed on January 17th, but that show is for season ticket holders. Anticipating a high demand, Chautauqua organized the additional January 19th performance so more people could experience this one-woman show about a Canadian WWII Veteran's return to Juno Beach for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. If you know someone who is a history buff or feels strongly about honouring our Veterans, tickets to Jake's Gift would be a great gift. Once again, these are $30 or $32.50 online.
Many people support productions put on by schools and groups in our community. If you enjoy those plays and concerts, why not give Chautauqua shows a try? It's always an enjoyable evening, the atmosphere is relaxed (although it can get a bit stuffy in the top level of the theatre--but that's due to heat and not attitude!), and the drive home is short!
Tickets can be purchased online http://www.edsonartscouncil.com/,
at Thymes Two and The Red Brick
or by calling Marilyn at 780-723-6224

<![CDATA[TorQ Percussion Quartet]]>Sun, 29 Jan 2012 17:37:00 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2012/01/torq-percussion-quartet.htmlThe 2012 Chautauqua season started last night with a bang--and a crash and a boom and some rolls. Toronto-based TorQ Percussion Quartet performed a diverse program to an enthusiastic audience. Richard, Adam, Jamie, and Daniel entertained both with their expert playing and their humourous anecdotes. The first half of the program focused on marimba and vibraphone. During the second half, a wide variety of instruments and objects were used--including paint cans and a conch shell. Highlights of the evening were John Cage's Third Construction and Earth by quartet member Daniel Morphy. ]]><![CDATA[Body, Breath, Voice with David Wilson]]>Sun, 22 Jan 2012 18:29:57 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2012/01/body-breath-voice-with-david-wilson.htmlOn Saturday, January 21, David Wilson retured to Edson to facilitate his Body, Breath, Voice workshop. Tracy Templeton, Edson Creative Campus Coordinator, organized this workshop and most participants were repeat customers, having taken part in a similar June 2011 workshop. David is an Edmonton-based singer/conductor/voice coach/certified yoga instructor who regulary offers workshops through the Yoga Association of Alberta and through various yoga studios throughout Alberta.
In the 2.5 hour workshop, we stretched, laughed--and breathed. The yoga stretches and poses we did were chosen to help us expand and bring awareness to our breathing. This awareness of breath can help reduce anxiety, build confidence, and encourage relaxation. David is a wonderful instructor. Don't miss him the next time he comes to Edson! ]]>
<![CDATA[An Arts Centre for Edson]]>Wed, 19 Oct 2011 02:58:59 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2011/10/an-arts-centre-for-edson.htmlTonight, CANOE member group ACES (Arts Centre for Edson Society) made a special presentation to Edson Town Council. Speaking on behalf of the group, Peter Taylor officially unveiled the business plan. ACES asked mayor and council to put this arts centre at the top of their priority list. Following the presentation, Councillor Zahara--who represented council at ACES meetings for 4 years--was firm in his support of the project.

How about you? Do you want to see the arts centre become a reality? If so, talk to a councillor soon. They will be discussing the future of the arts centre during their November retreat.

<![CDATA[A Call To Artists]]>Tue, 27 Sep 2011 23:17:16 GMThttp://www.edsoncanoe.com/1/post/2011/09/a-call-to-artists.htmlThis message was received at the CANOE website:

Hi, My name is Jessie Lilly and I am with the group Create A Better Future. I am from Edson. We think of Creative ways to fundraise locally as well as globally. Through art auctions we display art work by local and student artists. In March we will be hosting another art auction at United Çycle to raise funds for the organization Kids Sport in Edmonton. Our goal is to help promote the work of local artists, while at the same time bringing awareness about local causes. I was wondering if you would be interested in donating any art work towards this cause. With each piece the artist will receive a letter stating their generous donation towards the organization. If the artist would like, they could also take part of the profit made on the piece. If you are interested in donating any artwork to this cause please contact me at (780)728-6406, or at my email jlilly@ualberta.ca. Thank you :) and I look forward to hearing from you. ]]>

These potters have created the Urban Forest Design Studio, near Wildwood. You may have noticed the blue signs on your way to or from Edmonton (from Edson). That's them. Definitely worth stopping.
